Configuring your e-mail -- Eudora -- Mac

1. Download the software and install it on your computer. We recommend you create a new folder for it. For example, let's call it "Eudora"

2. Run the program.

[Eudora icon]

3. When the program loads, you will see the Eudora task bar at the top of the screen.

[Eudora taskbar]

4. Go to the "Special" menu and select "Configuration..."

[Eudora configuration window]

5. Your "POP account" is your user ID @pop.svpal.org. For example, if your user ID is janedoe, your POP account is janedoe@pop.svpal.org

In this case, your "Real Name" would be Jane Doe

"Connection Method:" Select MacTCP if you are going to connect over PPP or network. Select Communications Toolbox (CTB) if you want Eudora to dial the modem.

We will come back to this shortly.

The "SMTP server" is smtp.svpal.org

NOTE: If you are on another network (using another Internet provider), you need to use their SMTP server. SVPAL will not allow you to relay e-mail. This is to prevent spammers from using us to spread their garbage. To find out what your SMTP server is, you should contact your other provider.

Click on "OK" to close the window and save the configuration options.

6. Now, did you select MacTCP or Communications Toolbox?

If you have to use the Communications Toolbox, you will also need a script to connect to SVPAL. The script is called SVPAL UNIX Navs. You need to download this script, decode it, and place it in your Eudora folder (which is in your System Folder, not the Eudora folder where you put the program Eudora).

The Eudora folder (in your System folder) may look like this:

[Eudora folder]

This is where your e-mail and preferences will be stored in your computer.

Now, go back to the program Eudora, and then to "File" and "Check Mail"

You will be asked to enter your password, and then Eudora will "Initialize the Communications Toolbox."

The Communications Toolbox might look like this:

[Communications Toolbox]

This window will appear the first time you try to connect. After you configure all the options, you will not see this window. If you want to bring it up later to change your options, you can do it from within Eudora: go to "Special" and then "Communications..."

You will need to type SVPAL's phone number in the "Dial phone number" window. If you select the "Display Modem Monitor Window" option, you will see a small window at the bottom of the screen, when dialing, showing you how the toolbox is communicating with the modem. This might be useful when things go wrong, or simply if you want to know what's going on.

Next, select the correct baud rate for your modem (SVPAL supports a maximum of 38.4K). "Parity" should be none. "Data bits" should be 8. "Stop bits" should be 1. "Handshake" should be whatever your modem supports--ideally, DTR & CTS. Select the correct port where the modem is connected (most likely, the modem port). Click on "OK" to close the window and save your settings.

Now the modem will dial, the connection will be established, the script will log you on to the system, and Eudora will check for new mail. If you have new mail, Eudora will retrieve it. Then, the connection will close and the modem will hang up.

This is Eudora's status window:

[Eudora status window]

Here you will see what Eudora is receiving and sending.

This is the modem's status window:

[Modem status window]

Here you will see what the modem is doing (dialing, connecting, hanging up).

Note: If nothing seems to happen, wait at least 30 seconds. Then, you can cancel with the Command-period keys.

A couple of notes...

Back in the Eudora program, go to "Special" and then "Switches." The window may look like this:

[Eudora switches]

Here you may choose to "Save Password." If your computer is secure (no one else uses it), you may choose to save your password so that you do not have to type it every time (which also increases the chances of making a typo).

Make sure the option to "Leave Mail On Server" is UNCHECKED, because you do not want your mail to accumulate on SVPAL and exceed your quota; you want to download it to your machine.

For further information about Eudora, check the official documentation.
