SVPAL - Gmail Setup

The following instructions guide you through the setup for Gmail on an Android phone. (Gmail on other devices should be similar)

General Email Setup instructions.


1. The First step is to start up Gmail.

You should see a window like this.


If you already have one or more accounts set up in Gmail, then you need to tap the 3-bar menu, then tap Settings, then tap Add account.

Then tap Add an email address.

2. This screen appears labeled Set up email.


Select Other at the end of the list.

3. This screen appears labeled Add your email address.


Enter your SVPAL email address in the input field labeled “Enter your email” (eg. janedoer@svpal.org).

Click Next when ready.

4. This screen is labeled with your email address (eg. janedorer@svpal.org).


Select the account type. Either choice POP3 or IMAP works, but IMAP gives you access to shared folders on the server, so this option is preferred. once you make your choice, the next screen is displayed.

5. This screen is labeled with your email address (eg. janedorer@svpal.org) and asks for your SVPAL password.


Enter your SVPAL password in the input field labeled Password.

Click Next when ready.

6. This screen labeled Incoming server settings asks you to confirm your settings.


The Username input field should display your SVPAL email address.

The Password input field should be the password you entered previously.

The Server input field should be modified to read imap.svpal.org, if you selected account type IMAP.

The Server input field should be modified to read pop.svpal.org, if you selected account type POP3.

Click Next when ready.

Gmail tests your incoming server settings and displays an error message if there is a problem with accessing the incoming email server. Correct the problem, then click Next to retry.

7. This screen labeled Outgoing server settings asks you to confirm your settings.


The Require signon should be turned on.

The Username input field should display your SVPAL email address.

The Password input field should be the password you entered previously.

The Server input field should be modified to read smtp.svpal.org.

Click Next when ready.

Gmail tests your outgoing server settings and displays an error message if there is a problem with accessing the outgoing email server. Correct the problem, then click Next to retry.

8. This screen labeled Account options asks you to confirm your settings.


The default settings here should be fine.

Click Next when ready.

9. This screen labeled Your account is set up and email is on its way!


Enter an Account name in the input field [the default is your SVPAL email address (eg. janedorer@svpal.org)].

Input your name in the Your name input field as you would like it to appear in your outgoing email.

Click Next when ready to add the account to Gmail.

10. This screen is labeled You can now add all your email addresses.


It may take a few minutes for Gmail to sync up with your SVPAL email. You may need to click on TAKE ME TO GMAIL more than once.
If your email fails to sync, review your setup for your SVPAL email and retry.
